A few weeks ago I saw a new Civic Type R parked on the street and figured I might as well post what I think. Yes, I still love the cleaner lines of the earlier Type Rs and I don’t like the fake vents and what not...
BUT,
After seeing it irl I have to say it has very nice proportions, the overall shape of the car is quite aggressive for a hatchback (?) and I think it actually works, aside from some details like the vents and maybe the wing (saw it in passing and didn’t quite soak in the details). If you think it looks ugly on a screen, I would recommend to reserve judgement until seeing it irl.

I’ve seen one IRL on a car hauler, still looks a little too riced out for my taste, but I respect that the performance is there.

If you are going to buy a fast small car that has the letter R affixed to the end of it’s name I can think of a better one.

I don’t really disagree, the wing, exhaust tips, etc. are pretty ricey. I think a few things could be removed/simplified/cleaned up, and with some more subtle details instead of IN YOUR FACE FAST BITS it would be a really good looking car. The base of the design and profile are already looking good, is all I’m trying to say.

I’m not really sure which car you’re specifically talking about lol, and there’s no way I put that money down for a FWD car. I’d take a RWD for the handling dynamics instead, regardless if it’s actually faster or not.

If I was in the market, here would be my list in that group:
1. Focus RS
2. Golf R
3. Camoflauged Type-R
4. STI
I think it’s Juke levels of unfortunate looking.

The Golf R is AWD right? Barring price (which I’m too lazy to find and compare especially in CAD), I’d take a Golf R or Focus RS too.

Both cost a bit more, but as of right now you can get an RS for less than the Civic if you know where to look.

Look at that stupid chrome bar over its face. Ew.
And the way the hood is so high that it needs to abruptly and awkwardly slope back down after the A pillar just so the car has a side window? Disgusting.

(My fault): I meant between the two (RS and Golf R), I’d compare prices, but regardless of price of the two I’d take them over the Type R.

Let me correct myself, that is entirely correct.
Is that really Championship Black? Looks kinda like matte/wrap.

It is beyond fugly, but a hot Honda with a red H badge and wing is like catnip to me. I’m torn.

I’m not really sure if there’s much of a difference here, and in pictures it doesn’t really do the overall shape justice, but we might have to just agree to disagree.

i might say yes to that. I have hooned plenty of FWD cars in MI winters but AWD and 4x4 is soooo fun

I like a more subtle car that is quick but doesn’t draw attention. So no for me too. Saw one last week, even with the performance I’m not impressed. Not into the F&F look. It will sell well to parents who have too much money to spend on their kids.

No doubt, I love AWD, but some of the most batshit, sideways rides I’ve had were in FWD cars.

Nope. Weight transfer and balls of steel. The wide angle lens straightens it out so it doesn’t look as dramatic, but check out his hands.

20" wheels feel out of place on a performance hatch and I wish they kept the designed it more aligned with the spirit of the EK Type-R, but I can’t fault them for their achievements on the new one - mechanical and aesthetics.

It probably drives better than any car in its class, Honda know how to do this.
Shame though, I still think it looks like it’s been in an accident.
